Installation and commissioning
1. On unpacking, check the sensor for possible mechani-
cal damage of the pH sensitive glass, the diaphragm(s),
the body and the connector. Report any damage imme-
diately to your METTLER TOLEDO supplier.
2. R emove the watering cap and rinse the sensor with
deionized water. After rinsing, the sensor should only
be dabbed dry with a t issue. Do not rub the pH sensitive
glass, since this can lead to electrostatic charging and
sluggish response times.
3. C arefully check the space behind the pH sensitive glass
for the presence of any air bubbles and remove same
by gently swinging the sensor in a vertical plane.
4. R emove completely from the electrode, the T-shaped
rubber stopper in the electrolyte refill opening and its
elastic securing band before inserting the electrode into
the housing. Also remove possible electrolyte rests in
the filling port.
5. P lease refer to the instruction manual of the relative
housing in order to install the sensor correctly.
6. C onnect the sensor to the pH transmitter, using a corre-
sponding cable. Please refer to the wiring and terminal
diagram accompanying the cable.
7. For electrodes with Pt 100 temperature sensors, 3-wire
technique is recommended in order to obtain best mea-
surement accuracy. P lease refer to the cable and trans-
mitter instruction manuals for the corresponding cable
wire connections.
8. Intelligent ISM
"Plug and Measure" and extended diagnostics. For in-
stallation, commissioning and operation of the ISM sys-
tem please observe the instructions for the transmitter,
module and cable.

Operation

5.1 Calibration of the sensor and pH transmitter
For InPro 2000 (i) sensors, a 2-point calibration is recom-
mended. The calibration can be made with the sensor either
ready for mounting or already mounted within the housing.
After removing the watering cap, the sensor is dipped in
succession into two different buffer solutions with given pH
reference values and the transmitter is calibrated to these
buffer values.
5.2 Sterilization of sensor
In the case of sterile processes, such as in fermentation ap-
plications, the sensors are sterilized prior to the production
cycle. Sterilization is normally effected by means of steam
or superheated process medium with the sensor already
mounted in the reactor inside its housing.

5.3 Housing pressurizing

During possible sensor sterilization and during normal
operation, it is important that the housing and electrolyte
pressure is adjusted to be higher than the effective pressure
in the reactor vessel. This measure is necessary in order
to avoid medium intrusion into the electrolyte. The optimal
pressure difference value to keep the diaphragm clean and
obtain acceptable electrolyte refill intervals has to be estab-
lished empirically from case to case.
