Inertia: Causes unwanted movement of loaded goods
when braking, accelerating and turning
Gravity: Pushes the loaded goods against the
vehicle floor, (this is the force that attracts a body to the
Earth).
Friction: Opposes two interacting surfaces from
sliding over each other. The rougher the surface, the hig-
her the friction. The friction force helps prevent the goods
from moving. The higher the friction, the smaller the force
needed from securing aids to hold loaded items in place.
The coefficient of friction is measured using the units μD.
The friction force is worked out by multiplying the coeffici-
ent of friction by the weight.
Restraining force: Is the force that the securing aids need
to apply to prevent loaded goods from tipping over or
slipping (inertia minus friction).
A decanewton = (daN), is equivalent to approx. 1kg, a
load with a mass of 1000kg will push down on the vehicle
floor with a force of approx. 1000 daN
Friction enhancing matting
The use of friction enhancing matting, (FE matting),
between the floor and the load or between the loaded
goods themselves, increases the
coefficient of friction and reduces the number of restraints
needed to secure a load.
Once the sum of the friction force and the restraining
force is equivalent to the
inertia, sufficient securing aids have been applied to cancel
out the horizontal force.
The use of bott load safety matting / pads provides a
