This button
is
used to select fhe other types of
display.
Every time the "Scan"
button is pressed, the arrow moves to the next type of
display.
When the
word "SCAN" appears in the
display,
the display type changes
automati
cally every five seconds. The automatic change is stopped by pressing the
"Scan" button 9 second time and the last setting is retained
.
The display
can be switched off by pressing the On/Off button. It also goes off auto
matical ly after four minutes. The number of kilometres covered is added to
gether and can be shown as a total in the appropriate
display.
Underneath the training computer is a diagram (9) for monitoring the pul
se rate during exercising. The yellow zone contains a recommendation for
pulse rate in relation to age. The
max
imum pulse rate shown above the
yellow zone should never be exceeded
.
Please red the training instructions
carefully on this point.
To keep track of your own personal program of exercise, the figures achie
ved can be entered in the performance table.

- Using a screwdriver, press the spent batteries Bland B2 carefully out
of
their holders (Fig.

.
- Replace them with fresh batteries of the type LR 44, A 76 or G 13. Note:
the

terminal must face upwards.
- Reconnect the leads and stow them in the lower compartment of the in
strument panel.
- When batteries are changed, the total number of kilometres covered is
deleted from the memory and may be replaced by a completely different
figure. For this reason, the "RESET" button (Fig.

on the rear of the com
puter must be pressed (after the computer has been switched on again)
to return the total kilometre display to zero
.

The calculation
of
energy consumption is based on lood stage 4
for.
25,
50, 75 and 100 turns of the pedals pro minute. Energy consumption is sta
ted in kilocalories
.
The figures stated are intended as a guideline only.
Pulse rate measurement
The training computer also comprises a pulse measurement feature. The pulse
sensor functions with infra-red light and measu res changes in the transpa
rency
of
,the sk
i
n caused directly by pulse rate. Before clipping the sensor
to your earlobe, rub it vigourously about 10 times to increase its circulation
.
The pulse rate display jumps to 60 and then returns to the true reading wit
hin the
nex
t 30 seconds. The advantage of the delay li es in the ensuing con
sistency of the display. Lorge fluctuations are thus avoided
.
Due to the hig h degree
of
amplification
of
the impulses transmitted by the
sensor, all factors causing interference must be avoided.
- Attach the earclip firmly to the earlobe.
- Do not exercise directly under strong light, e.g
.
neon
light,
halogen light,
spotlights or sunlight.
- Avoid any vibration or swaying of the sensor and its lead. Use the clip
provided to
attac
h the lead to your clothing.
If errors should occur, check the above points carefully. For all types of dis
play, the readings are updated every five seconds.
Battery change
If the display is faint or foils to appear, the battery must be changed. Two
batteries are required forthe computer model 9405. The batteri es are chan
ged as follows,:

.
In case of error, press both buttons. All the figures are now shown in the
display. When the buttons are released, the computer goes off automati

Instructions for Exercising with the Kettler Astr.a
The Kettler Astra exercise cycle has been developed especially with the
amateur in mind, and is an excellent machine for training the cardio
vascular system (heart and circulation).
Before commencing
any
course of training, however, consult your family
doctor to determine your actual state of health, and whether you are fit
enough for such a course of training
.
Exercising with the Kettler Astra
Your course
of
exercise/training should be arranged methodically on the
basis of endurance training, which brings about certain changes and
adaptations in the cardio-vascular system
.
Among others, this concerns the
lowering of the pulse rates during pauses and when exercising
.
The heart is then beating more slowly and more time is available for the
heart to take in blood, and for the blood to circulate through the heart's
own muscles. In addition
,
the depth
of
respiration increases so that the lungs
take in more air during each breath (increased vital capocity). Further
positive changes also occur in the metabolic system
.
In order to achieve
these positive changes,
however,
certain exercising rules must be followed.
Exercise intensity
The effort intensity when "cycling" can be controlled either by the pedalling
speed or by the pedal resistance which can be altered with the "gear shift"
.
You should always ensure that you are exercising within your ability
do NOT overstress yourself. Wrong exercising patterns can be more
damaging than beneficial.
