Using the Optimizer, cutting potential was maximized
and waste was minimized.
Below is a comparison of an ALS 4.0 and a component
saw. Figure 41 highlights the advantage of using the
Optimizer feature on the ALS 4.0.
Example:
The job chosen for this comparison contained
11 trusses and 121 pieces.
ALS 4.0
Stock lengths of 14, 16,
and 18 ft. were used.

Optimizer Options

The Optimizer yields the least waste when the
following general conditions exist:
• The number of different pieces in the job file (the
selection pool) is large (250 or more)
• There are a wide variety of lengths in the file. The
more shorts, the better.
• The number of different sizes and grades of stock
required for the job is small.
Component Saw
Stocks lengths of 8, 10,
and 12 ft. were used in all
three runs.
The job was cut three
times with waste longer
than 2-0-0, 2-9-0, and
3-0-0 respectively
recycled back through
the component saw or a
radial arm saw.
COMPONENT SAW
WASTE
Recycle 2-0-0: 9.31%
Recycle 2-9-0 (above): 11.79%
Recycle 3-0-0: 13.97%
For the most effective optimization and material
handling ease, it is recommended to follow the steps
below:
• Break jobs down into smaller groups of 6-10
trusses
• Cut all webs together
• Specialty parts (bevels, wedges, sliders, etc.)
should all be sent to the ALS 4.0. In most cases,
these parts can be cut from one grade/size stock.
Turns on the feature that causes the saw to review
multiple stock pieces and choose the stock that
produces the least waste. Stock pieces to be used can be
chosen or revised from the Change Stock screen (Figure
18, Section 3.3.4).

When using this option the operator will have to pay attention to
the user interface as to what length and grade lumber to feed into
There are several modifiers that affect the operation of
the Optimizer. They are all located on the Optimizing
Options panel (Figure 31 & Figure 46, Section 3.5.3):
Selecting each option will mark a check in the box.
Doing so will result in the following change.
• Match Grade Size – With the Multiple Stock Pieces
selected (Figure 42), Match Grade-Size can be
selected as a modifier. Selecting this feature will
request lumber by grade and size. The saw will
request like lumber grades and sizes until all of the
same stock has been cut.

the user interface as to what length and grade lumber to feed into
• Cut all Within Grade – With Multiple Stock Pieces
selected (Figure 42), Cut All within Grade can be
selected as a modifier. Selecting this feature will
match all grades regardless of size. This will set
the cutting order by like grades until a change is
required for the remaining stock.
Match Grade-Size and Cut All within Grade are mutually exclusive.
Both of these features cannot be turned on at the same time.
