Environmental hazards
Many accidents related to forklift truck operation
are directly traced to work environment. If you
see any of the following conditions that can
cause accidents or injuries, be sure to eliminate
them. In addition, look for other hazards that
may be unique to your workplace; things that
could cause injury that only you know about and
that only you can eliminate or avoid. Plant
layout is one important factor to consider to help
reduce or avoid environmental hazards.
Slippery road surface
Be sure to remove any water, oil, sand, ice or
snow from the operating surface before
operation, as this may cause the operator to
lose control. Change or repair a damaged or low
tire immediately. Don't keep driving.
Rough ground
Bumps, pot holes or sharp objects on the
ground must be eliminated or guarded to
prevent any damage to the truck or tip over.
Always ensure that the forklift truck travels on a
smooth level surface free of hazards.
Road Shoulders, unstable ground
Be sure to take precautionary safety measures
when operating near the shoulders of roads or
any ground that could become unstable. It is not
recommended to operate the forklift in or around
these areas.
Platforms, walls or drop offs
Dock related injuries can be reduced with the
use of trailer locks, proper edge guarding, and
well designed dock levelers. To help reduce the
chance of trailers creeping forward, never allow
your forklifts to enter trailers that are not
properly parked and secured. Chock the wheels
and use a jack to support the front or rear of the
trailer as necessary. Guard drop offs or other
uneven surface areas. Repair pot holes or other
uneven surface areas where the forklift will
operate.
Snowy, frozen surface
The use of tire chains can help improve traction
on snowy or frozen surfaces. However, there is
no guarantee that tire chains will keep your
forklift from sliding forward, to the side, or
backwards when used.
Poor lighting
Workplace must be well-lighted. Where the
lighting is insufficient, provide adequate lighting
or consult with the Service Centre about
installing auxiliary lights on the truck.
Noise
Particular care must be taken when using the
forklift truck in noisy environments. Loud noises
can distract the operator and cause fatigue.
Noises and hearing protectors also make it
harder for pedestrians to notice the truck.
