5.3.3 Steering, turning, changing
direction
Use the left hand to turn the steering wheel. The
right hand should be used for load controls.
Slow down to a safe speed when turning. Never
turn sharply.
&CAUTION
Watch rear end swing. The rear wheels steer
the forklift and when the forklift truck turns, the
rear of the truck swings wide in the opposite dir-
ection of the turn. Use mirrors for extra side vis-
ion and check tail swing when going forward.
Pedestrians may not know about the rear end
swing. Use particular care when making turns in
confined areas or narrow aisles.
&CAUTION
To maintain stability, forks should be as low as
possible when turning. Never turn when forks
are elevated with or without load.
&CAUTION
Travel straight up or down on an inclined sur-
face. Turning on such surface may cause forklift
to overturn.
5 SAFE OPERATION
5.3.4 Reversing
Bring the forklift truck to a complete stop before
shifting from forward to reverse.
Always look in the direction of travel. When
traveling in reverse, always look behind you and
keep your path of travel clear and reduce
traveling speed. Watch for people. Do not
depend on the rear-view mirror to clear path of
travel. Consider the use of guide or other aids to
increase visibility. With the LPG tank, as the
rear view may be obstructed, reduce the
traveling speed and use care for surrounding
people or obstacles.
Take care not to let the fork ends hit
surrounding obstacles when turning the truck
during traveling in reverse.
5.3.5 Pedestrians
The operator has a primary responsibility to
protect the safety of pedestrians. Give right-of-
way to pedestrians.
When appropriate, use your horn to ensure
pedestrians are aware the forklift is
approaching. Never deliberately frighten
pedestrians into moving aside by flashing the
lights or sounding the horn.
Do not depend on lights or horns. The best way
for operators to avoid pedestrians is to look in
the direction of travel, sound the horn when
vision is obstructed, travel slowly, and give
pedestrians the right-of-way.
