Check the electrolyte temperature with a
thermometer, and convert the measured
specific gravity into the specific gravity at 20°C.
NOTICE
Records concerning the battery should be kept
properly as references to understand the battery
condition.
6.1.3 Relationship between
electrolyte specific gravity and
temperature
Specific gravity conversion equation
S20 =St+ 0.000?(t - 20)
S20: Specific gravity converted to 20°C
St: Specific gravity measured at t°C
t: Electrolyte temperature (°C) at the time of
measurement
6.1.4 Charging batteries
Charge the battery as soon as possible after
operating the truck.
When the truck is not in use, it is not necessary
to charge daily. For details, see "Storing the
truck" section.
&CAUTION
The explosive hydrogen gas is generated during
the charging process. To prevent the gas from
igniting, observe the following instructions:
Always use a battery charger suitable for
the battery fitted on the forklift truck; on re-
quest the manufacturer can supply it.
It is absolutely prohibited to smoke or use a
open flames when charging the battery.
Post a "No Exposed Flames" sign in the
area.
Charge the battery only in approved, well-
ventilated areas with very few persons.
Also, select a place not exposed to rain or
water.
The battery hood must remain open during
charging.
Turn the key off before charging and never
start or operate the truck while charging.
Before charging, make sure that the plugs
are properly connected.
To avoid sparks, do not stop charging by
disconnecting the charging plug or battery
plug.
• Always use the controls on the switch panel
to stop charging. Do not stop charging by
disconnecting the switch breaker at the
power source as this will cause the battery
charger to assume that a power failure has
occurred and result in abnormal operation.
Do not let the electrolyte run out. Check the
electrolyte level before and after the char-
ging operations. When checking the electro-
lyte, make sure the truck is on a flat sur-
face. Only the water content of the fluid (di-
luted sulphuric acid) decreases when the
battery is charged. Add distilled water if ne-
cessary.
