4.4.3. TRANSPORTING THE STRETCHER

For the transport of the patient follow the approved medical emergency techniques, with the side handles raised and the patient
secured to the stretcher by the safety belts (§ 4.4.2).
Remember always to attach the patient to the stretcher with the safety belts to avoid injury to the patient.
Check the tightness and the position of the belts on the patient on every occasion of use.
Before moving the stretcher check that the handbrake on the rear wheels has been released
It is recommended to confine the movement of the stretcher to level surfaces that are not irregular and are approximately horizontal;
where this is not the case, use an alternative route.
In dealing with minor obstacles such as pavements, doorsills et cetera, direct the stretcher at right angles to the line of the obstacle and
traverse it using the wheels, if necessary with the help of other operators/ assistants. In all such cases the operator in charge of
movement must always face the patient.
In all such cases the operator in charge of movement must always face the patient.
Remember to apply the hand brake on both wheels while the stretcher is stationary, to avoid unwanted
movement.
THE PATIENT SHOULD NEVER BE LEFT UNATTENDED WHILE HE IS ON THE STRETCHER.

4.4.4. LOADING THE STRETCHER ON TO THE AMBULANCE

To load the stretcher into the ambulance correctly, either directly or using a stretcher support, the following procedure must be
followed:
1. begin to place the stretcher head first into the ambulance or on to the supporting platform until the load-bearing wheels are on
the floor of the ambulance or the loading equipment;
2. with the hands placed at the ends of the tubular section at the foot end near the operating lever, push the stretcher until the
buffers of the front legs touch the body of the ambulance or the support;
3. use the green security lever to release the front legs and, continuing to push the stretcher forward, use the green hooking lever
on the right to control the release of the front legs.
4. continue to move the stretcher forward inside the ambulance or on the stretcher support so that the buffers, sliding along the
surface or the ambulance or support structure, fit inside the front legs;
5. when the buffers of the rear legs come into contact with the body of the ambulance or the support, hold in position the green
lever that releases the front legs and use the red hooking lever on the left to release the rear legs.
When the rear legs are folded the operator must support about half of the weight of the patient and the
stretcher. For particularly heavy patients use additional auxiliary personnel (§ 3.3.).
6. push the stretcher completely into the ambulance or on to the stretcher-bearing platform of the support;
7. attach the stretcher completely to the fixing system provided on the ambulance using the mushroom pin at the foot end and the
mounting pin under the trolley at the head end.
Inside the ambulance the stretcher must be completely attached using appropriate fixing systems (§ 7.2.) to
avoid any movement whatsoever while the vehicle is in motion.

4.4.5. UNLOADING THE STRETCHER FROM THE AMBULANCE

To unload the stretcher from the ambulance correctly, either directly or using a stretcher support, the following procedure must be
followed:
For unloading it is not necessary to use any lever or device.
1. unhook the stretcher from the blocking devices in the fixing system of the ambulance;
2. take hold of the stretcher in the central part of the tubular section at the foot end;
3. begin to remove it from the ambulance or the support structure until the rear legs are automatically lowered;
