MIC-KEY* Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
The MIC-KEY* is a replacement low profile gastrostomy tube. It is available in diameters from 12 Fr. (4 mm) to 24 Fr.
(8 mm) for stomas from 0.8 to 4.5 centimeters in length.
CAUTION:
• THE FOLLOWING COMPLICATIONS MAY BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE USE OF GASTROSTOMY TUBES:
HYPERGRANULATION, PULMONARY ASPIRATION, TRACT DISRUPTION, FISTULA FORMATION, AND GASTRIC
IRRITATION. REPORT ANY REDNESS, IRRITATION, SORENESS OR UNUSUAL DRAINAGE TO YOUR HEALTH CARE
PROFESSIONAL.
SIZE SELECTION
Selection of the correct size MIC-KEY is critical for the safety and comfort of the patient. Select the same French size as the
previous gastrostomy tube. Measure the length of the patient's stoma with the MIC* Stoma Measuring Device (Figure 1). The
shaft length of the MIC-KEY selected should be the same as the length of the stoma.
STOMA MEASURING PROCEDURE
The MIC-KEY shaft length is the distance in cm between the underside of the disc (Figure 1,D) and the top surface of the
balloon (Figure 1,C) when the balloon (Figure 1,E) is filled with 5 ml of fluid.
NOTE: Work quickly to prevent tract constriction.
1. Moisten the tip (Figure 1,B) of the measuring device with water soluble lubricant or water.
2. With the patient in an upright position, gently insert the device through the stoma into the stomach. DO NOT USE FORCE.
3. Fill the balloon with 5 ml water or air (Figure 1,A).
4. Pull device outward until the balloon is against the inside of the stomach wall.
5. Slide the plastic disc down to the skin.
6. Read the number above the plastic disc.
7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 with the patient in the supine position.
8. An average of the two measurements is the correct length for the patient. If there is a question, choose the longer length.
9. Record the measured centimeter shaft length on the MIC-KEY Patient Information Card.
10.Remove the water or air in the balloon and remove the device.
MIC-KEY PLACEMENT PROCEDURE
1. Remove the MIC-KEY (Figure 2) from the package and
fill the balloon (Figure 2,A) with 5 ml (3 ml for 12 Fr.) distilled or sterile water using the 6 ml luer slip Syringe from the kit.
If the balloon (Figure 2,D) is asymmetrical, gently roll it between your fingers or your hands until the balloon frees itself.
2. Remove the water from the balloon.
3. Lubricate the tip of the tube with water soluble lubricant and gently insert the MIC-KEY through the stoma into the stomach.
4. Fill the balloon (Figure 2,A) with 5 ml (3 ml for 12 Fr.) of distilled or sterile water.
CAUTION: NEVER FILL THE BALLOON WITH AIR. AIR WILL RAPIDLY MIGRATE OUT OF THE BALLOON AND THE MIC-KEY
WILL NOT STAY IN PLACE.
5. Check the MIC-KEY around the stoma for gastric leakage.
CAUTION: DO NOT EXCEED 10 ML VOLUME INSIDE THE BALLOON OR 5 ML IN THE 12 FR SIZES.
BOLUS AND SECUR-LOK* EXTENSION SET-UP
Use either the Bolus (Figure 4) or SECUR-LOK (Figure 3) Extension Sets for gastric feeding and gastric decompression.
1. Disconnect the plug (Figure 2,C) from the feed port (Figure 2,B).
2. Connect the SECUR-LOK (Figure 3) or the Bolus (Figure 4) Extension Set. Align the black line on the set (Figure 3,D or
Figure 4,B) with the black line on the MIC-KEY (Figure 2,B) feed port.
3. Lock into place by pushing in and turning the connector CLOCKWISE until you feel a slight
resistance (approximately a 3/4 turn). DO NOT turn the connector past the stop point.
4. To remove the extension set, rotate it COUNTER-CLOCKWISE until the black line on the extension set aligns with the black
line on the MIC-KEY. Remove the set and replace the plug (Figure 2,C).
CHECK FOR TUBE POSITION AND PATENCY DAILY
1. With either extension set connected, attach the catheter-tip syringe containing 10 ml of water to the feed port (Figure 3,B or
Figure 4,A). Aspirate gastric contents. The presence of gastric contents in the syringe confirms the correct tube position
inside the stomach.
2. Flush with 10 ml water. Check for leakage around the stoma. If there is a leak, reconfirm proper balloon inflation. Also check
the French size, stoma length, and placement.
3. If there is a question about proper tube placement, confirm the tube position radiographically. The MIC-KEY has a
radiopaque stripe on the tube. Do not use contrast inside the balloon.
4. Start feeding only after confirmation of proper placement and patency.
