1. Key guidelines

1. The guard trac™ and guard trac™ plus
guardrails are designed to control the risk of
serious falls of personnel. For safe and effi-
cient installation and use of the guard trac™
equipment, it is essential to read this manual
and strictly adhere to the instructions con-
tained in it.
2. This manual should be delivered to the
guard trac™ or guard trac™ plus guardrails
manager and be made available to any op-
erator and installer. Additional copies may
be supplied by Tractel® upon request. If the
customer requires the present manual in
another language than those provided here,
please contact a Tractel® representative.
3. All guardrails in the guard trac™ range (thus
excluding guard trac™ plus range) can be
supplied with or without toe boards, under
the name guard trac™ t-b. For greater ease
of reading, the words guard trac™ can refer
equally to the versions with or without toe
boards, unless it is specified to the contrary.
4. Never use guard trac™ or guard trac™ plus
guardrails if any of the markings that should
appear on it, as shown in the section 13, are
no longer present or legible.
5. Each person having access to an area pro-
tected by the guard trac™ or guard trac™
plus guardrails must meet the conditions of
physical and professional fitness to work at
height and be allowed to work in the area in
question. If in doubt, medical advice should
be sought.
6. As each installation of guard trac™ or guard
trac™ plus guardrails is unique, the specific
12
circumstances should be considered before
the installation commences. This should be
done by someone technically qualified for
such a job and should include the neces-
sary calculations. Particular attention should
be given to the lay-out of the project site,
the mechanical properties of the underlying
structure as well as properties of the roof
material that the guardrails are being placed
on. All the details of the study outlined above
should be stored in a technical file and
should be made available to the installer.
7. The installation of guard trac™ or guard
trac™ plus should be carried out using ap-
propriate means and while ensuring that the
risks to the installer of falling from height are
appropriately addressed.
8. The operation, maintenance and manage-
ment of the guard trac™ or guard trac™
plus guardrails should be placed under the
responsibility of people who know the safe-
ty regulations and standards for this type of
material and the equipment associated with
it. Each manager, installer and user must
have read and understood this manual. After
installation, the guard trac™ or guard trac™
plus guardrails must be checked by a com-
petent person to ensure compliance with the
installation plan, this manual and the techni-
cal file outlined above.
9. The guard trac™ or guard trac™ plus guard-
rails must be regularly inspected by the
manager to ensure the ongoing conformity
and compliance with applicable safety re-
quirements, rules and standards.
10. The guard trac™ or guard trac™ plus guard-
rails must never be used unless they are in
good condition. In case of visual detection
of a defect or any doubt about the condition
of the guardrail, it is essential to remedy the
defect found, before further use. Periodic
inspection of guard trac™ or guard trac™
plus guardrails is mandatory at least once
a year and must be scheduled, as indicated
in section 8.2, under the supervision of the
Manager of the installation person. This in-
spection must be carried out in accordance
with this manual's instructions.
11. The guard trac™ guardrails should only be
used for protection against falls from height,
whilst the guard trac™ plus guardrail can be
used for protection against falls from height
and to cordon off a dangerous area, in
