3-phase induction motors for
ATMOSPHERES containing EXPLOSIVE
• With lack of translation of this notice in motor used country language, it is the responsibility of the
distributor to translate and forward it to the end user.
• Other European languages available on our website: www.leroy-somer.com
• This document is a specific commissioning manual in addition to the general recommendations for
storage and commissioning ref 1889. It concentrates the recommendations detailed in the
Commissioning and maintenance guide FLSD ref: 5699
IMPORTANT
The following instructions must be read and respected together with the standards relating to the rules for
installing electrical equipment and for explosive atmospheres as well as all the documents which concerns the
area where equipment will be installed in explosive atmospheres, such as directives, laws, regulations, decrees,
orders, circulars and rules of the art. NIDEC LEROY-SOMER cannot be held responsible if any of these
documents are not respected.
• When the motors are supplied by electronic converters which are adapted and/or slaved to electronic command
or control devices, they must be installed by a professional who will be responsible for ensuring that the
electromagnetic compatibility rules of the country where the product is installed are respected.
• The professional is also liable for ensuring compliance with the values indicated on the motor information
plate(s), instruction manuals, installation and maintenance manuals and any other document provided by the
manufacturer.
• The equipment concerned by this manual cannot be commissioned before the machine into which they are
incorporated has been declared to conform to the Directives which apply to it.
• As standard, the shock strength for these motors corresponds to a «low» risk of mechanical danger, and as such
they should be installed in an environment with a low risk of shock.
• All unused openings must be covered with screwed plugs Ex... or fastened using a nut if the support features
smooth openings (thin plate).
• All the accessories (cable entries, plugs, etc.) mentioned in these instructions must be of a type which is approved
or certified for the group, application (gas and/or dust) and temperature class must be compatible at least with the
location in which the equipment is installed (see the information on the nameplate). They must be assembled in
accordance with the relevant instructions.
• The assembly of all these elements must guarantee the mode of protection (Ex) and protection indexes (IP, IK)
specified on the information plate. Sealing of the IP6X threading (mandatory if Ex tb marking) can be reinforced
with grease.
• All screwed elements must be locked and have at least 8 threads engaged and a min screwing depth of 8 mm.
• When repainting the machine, the thickness of the paint coat must not exceed 2 mm and
0.2 mm for the equipment of the IIC group; otherwise the paint must be antistatic. For group III motors, the paint
must be antistatic regardless of its thickness.
• Instructions for groups IIC (> 200 µm) and group III: electrostatic risk.
- Reminders on IEC EN 60079-0 §7.4:
Avoidance of development of a static charge in equipment:
- Maximum thickness of the non-metallic coat (paint):
Group IIB = 2 mm; Group IIC = 0.2 mm; Group III = no limit.
The instructions shall provide the user with recommendations to reduce the risk of electrostatic charge to the
minimum.
- Physical phenomena:
- Paint comes with electrostatic risks due to friction, e.g. during cleaning.
- Charges in suspension in the air may be drawn by the paint and charge it with static electricity: charges by
influence.
- Recommendations from Nidec Leroy-Somer:
- Earth continuity between the different metallic parts shall be ensured: casing, bearings, fan cover, etc.
- The equipment must be connected to earth permanently.
- To clean the motor, use a wet cloth or a means not causing any friction on the paint, e.g. using an ionised
blow gun.
- The user shall prevent the paint from charging with static electricity. For example: by slaving the motor's
running to the humidity rate of its location or by ionising the ambient air.

BEFORE INSTALLATION

• The user shall assess the electrostatic risks to meet the requirements of the IEC/TS 60079-32-1 guide.
• Check compatibility between the indications on the nameplate, explosive atmosphere, zone of use, ambient
temperature and the temperature class.
• The motors must be stored in their original packaging and in premises protected against moisture (HR<90%)
and vibrations.
- Motors fitted with lifetime greased bearings: maximum storage time = 2 years; beyond this time, replace the bearings
with identical ones.
- Motors fitted with greasers (see general manual ref. 5699).
• Check that the ventilation cover has no traces of impact.
