11. MAINTENANCE
Introduction: Maintenance can be "routine or unscheduled".
ATTENTION: All maintenance activities must be carried out
under safety conditions.
11.1 Routine maintenance wheel gear for tyred
vehicles:
The operator is responsible for routine maintenance
and must carry out the following activities.
- After a brief operating period of about 100 hours
(breaking-in), change the oil in the gear unit.
- Check that there are no metallic parts with unusual
dimensions in the magnetic plug of the gear unit.
- Change the oil in the gear unit while it is hot so that
it is easier to drain.
- Wash the interior of the gear unit with a suitable
liquid that is recommended by the lubricant manu-
facturer.
- Subsequent oil changes will be made every 2000-
2500 hours of operation or, in any case, each year.
- Do not mix different types of oil.
- Periodically check the levels (about once a month)
and top up if necessary.
- When the service brake pedal brakes at the bottom
of the stroke and not very strong: for a drum brake
adjust the brake shoes; for a disc brake replace the
brake pads.
- The lubrication oil for the multi-disc brakes is the
same one that lubricates all gears in the gear unit,
therefore the brake fluid is automatically replaced
when the gear unit oil is replaced.
ATTENTION: when checking the oil levels in wheel
gear units equipped with a multi-disk brake and
hydraulic motor, if the levels have risen, this means
that oil is penetrating either from the brake seals
or from the motor rotary seal. Contact the "Brevini
Service Department".
- Visually inspect, at time intervals that depend
on how the vehicle is used (max. 6 months), the
thickness of the brake pads in the disc brakes and
the thickness of the lining applied to the drum brake
shoes. For the disc brake, this thickness is checked
by looking behind the brake clamp at the residual
braking material, while for the drum brake, after
having removed the rubber grommet from the wear
check hole, check the wear on the lining applied to
the brake cap: if the wear is extensive shorten the
time intervals to avoid damaging the components of
the braking units.
- For each unit it is recommended to keep a chart
that will be duly filled out and updated each time
maintenance is performed.
11.2 Oil Change:
- Turn the wheel gear unit until the drain plug in pos.
"A" is at the lowest point as shown in the figure
below.
NOTE: in some types of Wheel Gear Units there is
a 3rd plug (Load) that is 18.0° opposite plug "A". In
some cases the plugs may also be located on the
sides.
- Unscrew the drain plug in pos. "A" and the level
plug in pos. "B" to make it easier for the oil to drain
from the gear unit. Once the oil has been drained,
replace the drain plug in pos. "A".
- Wash the interior of the gear unit with a suitable
cleaning liquid that is recommended by the lubricant
manufacturer. Do the following:
Put liquid into the gear unit and then replace the
filler plug; run the gear unit for a few minutes at a
high speed, then drain the cleaning liquid from the
gear unit.
- See paragraph 7 Lubrication for filling instructions.
11.3 Unscheduled maintenance:
BREVINI RIDUTTORI prohibits the gear unit to be
opened to carry out any operation that is not included
in routine maintenance procedures.
BREVINI RIDUTTORI not undertake any liability for
all those operations out of ruotine maintenance which
may have caused damages to people or things.
When the need arises, contact the nearest BREVINI
service centers as listed on page 9.6
