1. Function and Application: The Retractable type fall arrester is compliant to EN 360:2002 and EN 355:2002. The product consists of: a snaphook; housing;
retractable lanyard (line); load Indicator (See figures 4); and RFID tag (See figures 5). The line material is nylon webbing and it is marked on the product label (see
figure 8, pos. 13). The product is part of a fall arrest system to EN 363:2008 (Brazilian standard: ABNT NBR 14628; Argentina standard: IRAM 3605; Australian
standard: AS/NZS 1891.4:2009) when attached to the fall arrest attachment of a fall arrest harness to EN 361 (Brazilian Standard: ABNT NBR 15836 ; Australian
standard: AS/NZS 1891.4:2009) and an appropriate anchor point. The product shall not be used outside its limitations and intentions. See harness instructions
for approved attachment points.
The product may be used to provide continuous fall protection while ascending, descending, or moving laterally. If a user falls, the device will automatically
stop the user's descent in a short distance while limiting the fall arrest force on the user's body.
For twin-leg configurations only: The product is intended to give users 100% tie-off when moving around the work site. One of the legs must be attached to an
appropriate anchorage connector while the user moves to the new location. At the new location, attach the second leg to an appropriate anchorage connector
before disconnecting the original leg. Repeat this procedure until the final destination has been reached.
The product is RFID enabled.
Set up the PFL directly above the user for vertical fall arrest applications. A qualified person must review and approve applications horizontally or inclined. Do
not use the PFL as a positioning device. Allowable anchorage connection locations in the vertical plane are shown in figure 6
2. Training: It is the responsibility of the user of MSA Retractable type fall arrester to assure that they are made familiar with these User Instructions and trained
by a competent person. Ensure that you have been adequately trained in the use of this product equipment and make sure that you fully understand how it
works.
Chemical hazards, heat and corrosion may damage the product. More frequent inspections are required in these environments. Do not use in environments
with temperatures lower than -40°C and greater than 60°C.
3. Rescue plan: The user must have a rescue plan and the means at hand to implement it; and that plan must take into account the equipment and
special training necessary to affect prompt rescue under all foreseeable conditions. There should be direct or indirect visual contact or some other means of
communication with the rescue at all times during the rescue process.
4. Compatibility of system parts: All components connected to this product MUST be compatible. There are hazards that may arise by the use of combinations
of items of equipment in which the safe function of one item is affected by or interferes with the safe function of another. MSA Retractable type fall arresters
are designed to be used with MSA approved components and connecting subsystems. Connecting subsystems must be suitable for use in the application
(e.g. fall arrest). Refer to the manufacturer's instructions supplied with the component or connecting subsystem to determine suitability. Contact MSA with any
questions or for further information.
5. Physical limitations: The product is designed for one user whose weight, including clothing, tools, and other user-borne objects are less than the load capacity
140 Kg. Good physical condition is necessary in order to carry out work at a height. Certain medical conditions can threaten the users' safety during normal
use of this product and in emergencies (taking medications, cardiovascular problem, etc.). In any case of doubt, consult your physician before using. Pregnant
women and minors MUST NEVER use the product.
6. Operating Procedure:
Connect carabiner or snaphook to approved attachment point. Be sure the connector gate is completely closed and locked.
For twin-leg configuration: Connect units to harness (see Figure 2). Be sure the carabiner gate is completely closed and locked.
Be sure the snaphook's gate is completely closed and locked. User must pull quickly on the line and the unit must lock. Inspect the product to make sure that
the product doesn't undergo the drop or force, and the product must be in good working condition before use.
7. Formal Inspection
MSA requires that all SRLs be inspected by a competent person other than the user per the guidelines below. A competent person is an individual designated
by an employer who is responsible for the employer's fall protection program, and through training and knowledge, is capable of identifying, evaluating, and
addressing existing and potential hazards and who has the authority to take action. MSA requires inspections by a competent person at the following intervals:
Type of Use
Rescue & confined space,
Infrequent to Light
Factory maintenance
Transportation, Residential
Moderate to Heavy
construction, Utilities, Warehouse
Commercial construction, Oil &
Severe to Continuous
Gas, Mining
Record formal inspections in the provided Inspection Log. Punch or indelibly mark the Inspection grid attached to the SRL. Do not use an SRL with a formal
inspection date older than twelve (12) months. Tag SRLs with formal inspections that are out of date as "UNUSABLE" and remove from service until after formal
inspection. The safety of users depends upon the continued efficiency and durability of the SRL. MSA recommends keeping a log of formal inspections for all
components in a fall protection system or subsystem.
AS/NZS 1891.4 requires a competent person inspection at least every 6 months.
8. Inspection Guideline:
The product must be inspected before each use to verify it is in serviceable condition.
Inspect the webbing and clean regularly.
Do not oil the product.
