21 Storing the Machine

WARNING
The bits of the spring may still be under tension
and could fly apart when you remove the rope
rotor and spring housing. To reduce the risk of
injury, Wear a face shield and work gloves.

► Take out the screws (7).
► Remove the spring housing and pieces of
spring.
► Lubricate the new, ready-to-fit replacement
spring in the new spring housing with a few
drops of resin-free oil.
► Place the replacement spring with spring
housing in position – bottom plate facing up.
If the spring pops out and uncoils, refit it in the
clockwise direction, starting outside and working
inwards.
► Fit the screws.
► Refit the rope rotor as described in "Replacing
the Starter Rope".
► Tension the rewind spring.
► Install the fan housing.
21 Storing the Machine
If out of use for periods of about 30 days or lon‐
ger
► Drain and clean the fuel tank in a well-ventila‐
ted area.
► Dispose of fuel properly in accordance with
local environmental requirements.
► If a manual fuel pump is fitted: Press the man‐
ual fuel pump at least 5 times.
► Start the engine and run it at idling speed until
it stops
► Remove, clean and inspect the cutting attach‐
ment. Treat metal cutting attachments with
protective oil.
► Thoroughly clean the machine
► Cleaning the Air Filter
► Store the machine in a dry and safe place, out
of the reach of children and other unauthor‐
ized users

22 Sharpening Metal Cutting
Blades
► Use a sharpening file (special accessory) to
sharpen cutting attachments that are only
slightly worn. For heavy wear and nicks, use a
grinding machine or take them to a servicing
dealer. STIHL recommends the STIHL servic‐
ing dealer
► Sharpen frequently, removing little material –
two or three strokes of the file are usually suffi‐
cient for simple resharpening

► Sharpen cutter blades (1) evenly – do not
change the profile of the parent wheel (2)
More sharpening instructions can be found on
the packaging of the cutting attachment. So keep
the packaging in a safe place!
22.1
Balancing
► After sharpening about 5 times, check cutting
attachments with the STIHL balancer (special
accessory) to see if they are out of balance
and rebalance them or take them to a servic‐
ing dealer – STIHL recommends the STIHL
servicing dealer
