WARNING
Unintentional sparking can result in fire or
electric shock.
Unintentional start up can result in en
tanglement, traumatic amputation, or lac
eration.
BEFORE PERFORMING ADJUSTMENTS
OR REPAIRS
Disconnect battery at NEGATIVE (–) terminal.
D
Disconnect spark plug wire and keep it away
D
from the spark plug.
WHEN TESTING FOR SPARK
Use only Briggs & Stratton Spark Plug Tester.
D
DO NOT check for spark with spark plug
D
removed.
WARNING
Engines give off carbon monoxide, an
odorless, colorless, poisonous gas.
Breathing carbon monoxide can cause
nausea, fainting or death.
Start and run engine outdoors in a well ventilated
D
area.
Do not start or run engine in enclosed area, even if
D
doors or windows are open.
WARNING
Running engines produce heat. Engine
parts, especially the muffler, become
extremely hot.
Severe thermal burns can occur on
contact.
Combustible debris, such as leaves,
grass, brush, etc. can catch fire.
Allow muffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool
D
before touching.
Engine should be kept clean to reduce the risk of
D
overheating and ignition of accumulated debris.
Clean engine when it is cold, especially in the
muffler and manifold areas.
Install and maintain in working order a spark
D
arrester before using equipment on forest cov
ered, grass covered, brush covered unimproved
land. (The state of California Public Resources
Code Section 4442 requires a spark arrester in
working order.) Other states may have similar
laws. Federal laws apply on federal land.
WARNING
Starting engine creates sparking.
ing can ignite nearby flammable gases.
Gasoline, it's vapors and other gaseous
vapors are extremely flammable and
explosive. Fire or explosion can cause
severe burns or death.
WHEN STARTING ENGINE
Make sure spark plug, muffler, gasoline cap and
D
air cleaner are in place.
DO NOT crank engine with spark plug removed.
D
DO NOT start engine if there is natural or LP gas
D
leakage in area.
DO NOT use pressurized starting fluids because
D
vapors are flammable.
WHEN STOPPING ENGINE
DO NOT choke carburetor to stop engine.
D
WHEN ADDING GASOLINE
Turn engine OFF and let cool at least 2 minutes
D
before removing gasoline cap.
Fill gasoline tank outdoors in well ventilated
D
area, away from sparks, open flames, pilot lights,
heat, and other ignition sources.
Keep gasoline tank full. Do not overfill tank. Fill
D
tank to approximately 40 mm (1 1/2 inches)
below top of neck to allow for gasoline
expansion.
If gasoline spills, wait until it evaporates and the
D
vapors dissipate before starting engine.
Replace gasoline cap before starting.
D
Check gasoline lines, tank, cap, filter, and fittings
D
frequently for cracks or leaks. Replace if
necessary.
WHEN OPERATING EQUIPMENT
DO NOT tip engine or equipment at angle which
D
causes gasoline to spill.
WHEN TRANSPORTING EQUIPMENT
Transport with gasoline tank EMPTY or CLOSE
D
shut off valve.
BEFORE REPLACING GASOLINE FILTER
Drain gasoline tank or close shut off valve.
D
Gasoline can leak out, creating a fire/explosion
hazard.
WHEN STORING GASOLINE OR EQUIPMENT
WITH GASOLINE
DO NOT store near a furnace, stove, water
D
heater or other appliances which uses a pilot
light or other ignition source because they can
ignite gasoline vapors.
WARNING
Rotating parts can contact or entangle
hands, feet, hair, clothing, or accessories.
Traumatic amputation or severe lacera
tion can result.
Operate equipment with guards in place.
D
Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts.
D
Tie up long hair and remove jewelry.
D
DO NOT wear loose fitting clothing, dangling
D
drawstrings or items that could become caught.

WARNING
Spark
Do not touch radiator or open radiator /
reservoir caps when engine is hot or
running.
Severe thermal burns or injury
can occur by escaping steam or hot
engine coolant.
If Temperature WARNING Light comes on or gauge
D
rises into the HOT zone (105° C / 220° F), shut
down engine. Once engine is cooled, check for low
coolant level, improper fan belt tension and clogged
radiator fins.
To remove reservoir cap after engine is cool, place
D
a thick cloth over cap and remove it slowly.
To remove radiator cap after engine is cool, place a
D
thick cloth over cap and rotate it slowly counter
clockwise to the first stop. Pressurized steam may
emit from the cap, stand back to avoid injury. Once
all pressure is released, rotate cap counter clock
wise while pushing down on cap to remove.

OIL RECOMMENDATIONS

Use a high quality detergent oil classified
For Service SH, SJ or higher."
Choose correct Viscosity Grade type of oil for expected
starting temperature before next oil change.
Item Ê A Synthetic 5W 30 oil
Fig. 7
may be used for all temperatures.
The use of synthetic oil does not alter required oil
change intervals.
Note:
Use no special additives with recommended oils.
See MAINTENANCE section for checking and adding oil.

GASOLINE RECOMMENDATIONS

THIS ENGINE IS CERTIFIED TO OPERATE ON GASOLINE.
Use clean, fresh, lead free gasoline
85 octane. Fresh gasoline prevents gum from forming in
the gasoline system. Purchase gasoline in quantity that
can be used within 30 days.
See STORAGE section - Engine with gasoline over 30 days.
*
If lead free gasoline is unavailable, leaded gasoline may
be used if it is sold commercial. In the U.S.A. leaded
gasoline may not be used.
DO NOT mix oil in with the gasoline.
D
DO NOT use gasoline which contains methanol.
D
