ends
To avoid unraveling, it is necessary to leave a thread chain
2" (5 cm) tong at the beginning and end of the seam. To
secure the beginning and end of the seam choose one of
the following methods
At the beginning
of the seam
• Hand-tying
Separate the thread ends and tie them into a knot,
Thread the chain through a large eyed needle, and
weave that chain through the overlock stitches on the
fabric.
_c_ Apply a small amount of seam sealant (Fray
Check
TM
or Fray-No-More
TM)
at the edge of the
fabric. Cut the chain at the edge of the fabric.
• Chain lock seam beginning
Before putting your fabric in the machine, sew a thread
chain about 2" (5 cm) long behind the needle
Put your fabric on the machine. Then serge a few stitches
and stop.
Raise the presser foot and bring the thread chain to the
left around and under' the presser foot.
Place the thread chain between the presser foot and
upper knife, holding it in position as you lower the
presser foot to sew,,
After serging about 1" (25 cm), move the chain to the
right and under the upper knife, cutting the chain as you
serge,,
At the end of the seam
o Hand-tying
Apply the same method as described above,,
o Chain lock seam end
Serge one stitch off the end of the seam
Raise the needle and presser foot, and gently pull the
threads off the prong.
Turn the fabric over so that the wrong side is up,
Lower the presser foot and serge about 1" (2 5 cm) over
the stitching, and then angle off the fabric,,
