To reduce infection risk:
Make sure that your hands are thoroughly cleaned and dry before placing your hands in the area of your tracheostoma, and
before cleaning your voice prosthesis and/or accessories.
Keep all devices clean that may enter or make any contact with your tracheostoma and voice prosthesis.
To reduce risk of product damage:
Only use genuine Provox accessories that are intended for use with Provox ActiValve for the handling and cleaning of your
prosthesis. Other devices may cause personal injury or damage to the voice prosthesis.
Clean and lubricate the voice prosthesis as directed to help maintaining its functionality.
Only use Provox ActiValve Lubricant for lubrication of the Provox ActiValve voice prosthesis. Other lubricants may damage
the voice prosthesis.
To reduce risk of injury:
Always inform medical personnel about your Provox ActiValve and show them your Provox ActiValve User Card before
undergoing any kind of medical treatment or examination. Also see section Contraindications.
Keep the Provox ActiValve Lubricant and other accessories out of reach of children and pets that may be harmed by inhaling
or swallowing them.
Do not try to change the Provox ActiValve at home or by yourself. The device should only be removed and replaced by a
healthcare professional.

3. Instructions for use

3.1 How to use Provox ActiValve for speaking

Some people have negative pressure in the pharynx/ esophagus during swallowing or inhalation. This can cause the valve to
open unintentionally. The magnets in the valve increase the initial pressure needed to open the valve. Thereby unintentional
opening is prevented.
As a consequence, you may feel that you need more force to begin speaking. Once the initial magnetic resistance is overcome
Provox ActiValve is similar to using any other Provox voice prosthesis to speak.

3.2 Cleaning and Maintenance

In order for you to speak with your voice prosthesis, it must be clean so that air can pass through it. Regular cleaning of the
prosthesis also helps to prolong device life.
Brush the prosthesis with the Provox Brush twice a day and after each meal to remove mucus and food remnants from the
prosthesis. Flushing the prosthesis with the Provox Flush also helps to clean the device.
Once a day, after cleaning in the morning, also lubricate the inner lumen of the voice prosthesis with one drop of Provox ActiValve
Lubricant using a Provox Brush. Before use, read the Instructions for Use that accompanies the Provox ActiValve Lubricant.
Caution:
• Do not apply the Provox ActiValve Lubricant directly from the bottle to the voice prosthesis, since this could deposit
the liquid in the lungs [Fig. 2]. This or overuse of the lubricant in quantity or frequency can result in severe coughing,
pneumonia or serious breathing problems.
• Do not enlarge the bottle opening of the Provox ActiValve Lubricant.

3.3 Device lifetime

Depending on individual biological circumstances the device life varies, and it is not possible to predict the structural
integrity of the device over a longer period of time. The material of the device will be affected by e.g. bacteria and yeast, and
the structural integrity of the device will eventually deteriorate.
Adding certain food items such as buttermilk, probiotics and caffeinated soft drinks may reduce the occurrence of bacteria
and yeasts on the voice prosthesis. A well- balanced diet is important, please discuss with your clinician if changes in your
diet are recommended.

3.4 Accessories

The Provox Brush / Provox Brush XL is used to clean the inside of the prosthesis or apply Provox ActiValve Lubricant.
The Provox Flush is an additional cleaning device that allows flushing of the prosthesis.
The Provox Plug is a First Aid tool that temporarily blocks leakage through the prosthesis.
The Provox ActiValve Lubricant serves as lubricant for the valve surface inside the Provox ActiValve.
