Short Inspection of the Compressed Air Line Breathing Apparatus Before Use

8.4.1 DSL or MASS Compressed Air Line Breathing Apparatus

Air-tightness and Warning Signal Activation Pressure at the DSG or MASS Pressure Reducer
After donning the compressed air line breathing apparatus, carry out a short inspection in the following order:
Open the compressed air supply.
If the compressed air supply is from a compressed air cylinder: read off and check the high and medium
pressures on the pressure gauges.
If the supply is from a breathable air network: read off and check the operating (medium) pressure on the
pressure gauge.
Close the compressed air supply.
If using the DSG or MASS pressure reducer:
the compressed air line breathing apparatus is air-tight if the high pressure drop at the pressure reducer is
no more than 10 bar within 1 min.
If the compressed air supply is from a breathable air network:
the compressed air line breathing apparatus is air-tight if the high pressure drop at the medium pressure
gauge of the breathable air network is no more than 1 bar within 1 min.
Carefully activate the flushing function of the lung governed demand valve until air flows out, while closing off
the outlet opening as much as possible.
Watch the high pressure gauge at the pressure reducer.
The warning signal must be activated at 30 bar minimum (this does not apply if the air supply is from a
breathable air network).
Activate the flushing function again to depressurise the apparatus.
8.4.2 DSL or MASS ASV Compressed Air Line Breathing Apparatus (External Breathable Air Supply
Combined with a Self-Contained Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus)
Air-tightness and Warning Signal Activation Pressure if Breathable Air Supply is from Compressed Air
Cylinder(s) with MASS or DSG Pressure Reducer and Self-Contained Compressed Air Breathing
Apparatus
After donning the compressed air line breathing apparatus and self-contained breathing apparatus, carry out a
short inspection in the following order:
Open the compressed air supply.
Read off and check the high and medium pressures on the pressure gauges at the pressure reducer.
Open the cylinder valve(s) on the self-contained breathing apparatus by making about two turns of the hand
wheel.
Read the pressure gauge of the self-contained breathing apparatus:
Minimum pressure 270 bar for 300 bar cylinders
Minimum pressure 180 bar for 200 bar cylinders
Close the compressed air supply (airline pressure reducer and self-contained breathing apparatus).
The compressed air line breathing apparatus is air-tight if the pressure drops by no more than 10 bar within 1
min.
Carefully activate the flushing function of the lung governed demand valve until air flows out, while closing off
the outlet opening as much as possible.
Watch the high pressure gauge at the airline pressure reducer.
The warning signal must have activated by 30 bar.
