- The welding current is determined by the wire speed control, an increase the wire feed speed
increase the amperage while welding
- The welding current mainly affect penetration, increase the wire feed speed (and thus welding
current) will increase depth, width of weld penetration and increase the weld bead size.
- Voltage controls height and width of weld bead.
Low Voltage: wire stubs into workpiece upsetting the smooth flow of shielding gas and
pumping air into the arc stream causing porosity and cracking.
High Voltage: arc is unstable (spatter), cause porosity, undercut, and spatter.
Suitable voltage may produce stable, smooth Arc, good penetration....
- The correct setting of voltage and wire speed can be seen in the shape of the weld deposit and
heard by a smooth regular arc sound.
8.2.
Holding and positioning welding gun
Welding wire is energized when gun trigger is pressed. Before lowering helmet and pressing
trigger, be sure wire is no more than 13 mm past end of nozzle, and tip of wire is positioned
correctly on seam.
