8.3. The option of the welding speed.
Travel speed measures the arc's rate of progress along the weld line in mm/minute. If all other
variables are held constant, the greatest weld penetration will be at an intermediate speed. Too
low a travel speed, and the electrode melts on the top of the weld pool and penetration is poor.
At slightly higher travel speeds, the welding wire melts on touching the base metal, increasing
penetration. Still higher speeds reduce the heat input to too low a level for good penetration.

Stickout is the distance between the end of the contact tip and the end of the electrode wire
optimum stick-out is 5 mm. See Figure
