Display function test:
Activate the apex locator if this has not already been done.
Moisten a spot on your skin (e.g. on your hand) with water.
Then place the file clamp and the mucosal electrode on your skin a short dis-
tance away from each other. Change the distance and watch the display.
If the display reading remains stable in each case, the unit is functioning prop-
erly. Place the mucosal electrode on the patient's lip.
The depth measurement is indicated by a vertical row of bars represent-
ing the file tip in a root canal symbol located on the left side of the display.
If the bars have almost reached the tip of the symbol, this means that the
tip of the instrument has reached the apex (foramen apicale). An "A" then
appears to the right of the symbol and a continuous signal tone sounds.
When the apex has been exceeded, a rapidly flashing " – 1" is displayed
instead of the "A" and a long acoustic tone with short interruptions is
sounded.
Ideal moistening of the root canal can be attained by sucking the canal
dry with a surgical cannula after rinsing it.
The remaining residual moisture is the best prerequisite to ensure an ex-
act measurement.
