5.2 Disconnecting the battery
WARNING
◆ Always make sure that the vehicle's electrical system
is protected by disconnecting the battery before per-
forming work on the electrical system.
◆ Only unscrew the battery negative terminal (-) of the
battery.
◆ The battery positive terminal (+) of the battery must
only be unscrewed once the battery has been re-
moved from the vehicle.
WARNING
When working on pyrotechnic components and on the
airbag control unit, the battery negative terminal (-) of the
battery must be unscrewed when the IGNITION is
SWITCHED ON. The battery negative terminal (-) must
subsequently be covered.
You must wait ten seconds after the battery has been dis-
connected.
The battery must be connected when the IGNITION is
SWITCHED ON. There must not be anybody inside the ve-
hicle. Exception: vehicles with battery fitted inside the ve-
hicle. Do not sit within the airbag and seat belt deploy-
ment range.
– Switch on ignition.
– Remove the battery cover.
– Unscrew the battery terminal clamp for the earth wire -3- on
the battery negative terminal.
Waiting time: 10 seconds
– Switch off the ignition
Tightening torque of nuts on battery terminal clamp: 6 Nm
Steps after disconnecting the battery
◆ Switch on the ignition using the ignition key and then switch
off again.
◆ Read out the fault memory ⇒ vehicle diagnostic testers.
◆ Clock: Check time setting and reset.
◆ Electric window regulator: Fully open all windows and then
close again.
◆ Window regulator convenience switching mechanism: When
the convenience switching mechanism is actuated, the win-
dow must close without having to hold down the switch.
◆ Function test of all electrical consumers.
