Safety requirements for maintenance
1.3.1
General precautions
- Prohibit all unauthorized access.
- Do not attempt to make repairs you are not familiar with. Always follow the instructions and, if these
are not available, contact the supplier or a qualified technician. When starting an engine after making
repairs, take measures to prevent the intake of air in case the engine over-revs upon start-up.
- Keep the engine clean at all times, removing any traces of oil, fuel and/or coolants.
- Post a "DO NOT USE" sign on all the electrical cutoff devices designed to isolate those parts of the
system on which work is to be carried out. Whenever possible, use key-operated lockout devices to
prevent any accidental, dangerous manoeuvres.
- Always wear protective gloves when checking the batteries, changing the oil and cleaning the
machine
- Always wear a hard hat and protective glasses in the work area.
- Always wear safety footwear. Always make sure your hands and feet are dry when handling parts that
could be live. Use insulated platforms whenever necessary. If you are not familiar with the use of
these, ask a specialist to perform the operations or adjustments concerned.
- Do not remove the safety devices.
- Do not manually clean, oil, lubricate, repair or adjust any of the moving components.
- Never wear loose-fitting clothes, rings and/or necklaces when working near motors or moving parts.
- Risk of fire. Place wet rags in fire-resistant containers.
ATTENTION
Do not leave rags on the motor.
Risk of electrical current. Never perform any operations that require the assistance of at least one other
person, especially when these operations involve control devices like: switches, cut-off devices, fuses
and/or other live equipment.
1.3.2
Engine cooling circuit
- Periodically check the level of coolant and top it up when necessary, using only the appropriate type
ATTENTION
as indicated in the use and maintenance manual provided with the engine.
- Periodically check the tightness and wear of the control belts of the pump/fan.
- Never put coolant in a hot engine. Always wait for the engine to cool down beforehand.
Unscrew the cap on the radiator gently. The cooling circuits are normally pressurized and hot fluid could
escape suddenly if the pressure is released too quickly.
1.3.3
Lubrication circuit
Periodically check the level of oil and top it up when necessary, observing the instructions in the use and
ATTENTION
maintenance manual provided with the engine.
- Do not use naked flames when topping up the oil.
- Do not smoke when topping up the oil.
- Be careful: the engine produces toxic oil fumes when running. Make sure that there is a good
circulation of air in the room where the machine is installed.
1.3.4
Fuel circuit
- Do not use naked flames when topping up the fuel.
- Do not smoke when topping up the fuel. Be careful: fuels are toxic substances. Make sure that there is
a good circulation of air in the room where the machine is installed.
1.3.5
Gas exhaust circuit
Risk of extreme heat. Be careful: the exhaust pipes can become very hot and cause burns. For this
reason it is recommended to insulate the pipes to minimize the risk of personal injury.
Perform a visual inspection of the exhaust circuit to check for gas leaks. Make any necessary repairs as
soon as possible because leaks pose the risk of fire and/or of breathing in toxic gases.
