General Installation Safety
Torque Wrench selection
To select the correct capacity Torque Wrench for the applica-
tion, the estimated break out torque should be considered,
alongside the tightening torque. Bolts / Nuts assemblies that
have been correctly lubricated during the tightening process
will require approximately 1.5 x the tightening torque to
loosen following a period of service. provided they have not
been subjected to heat. Corroded / rusted nuts and bolts with-
out lubrication applied during tightening will require approx-
imately 2 x the tightening torque to loosen following a period
of service. Provided they have not been subjected to heat.
Nuts / Bolts subject to heat, seawater corrosion, chemical
corrosion can require 3 to 4 x the tightening torque For peri-
ods of continuous use, the torque wrench should be limited to
75-80% of its maximum torque output. Occasional use of the
torque wrench at full pressure/torque is acceptable, however
continuous use at maximum operating pressure will reduce
the life of the tool and system. If this cannot be avoided the
period between tool maintenance must be reduced. Ensure
the above loosening criteria has been considered when select-
ing a torque wrench. If accessories are used, ensure they are
rated to take the full output torque of the tool, e.g. some di-
rect fit hex drives and special reaction arms are not rated for
use at full pressure/maximum torque.
System Requirements
Every Atlas Copco hydraulic torque wrench is supplied com-
pletely assembled, and ready for use (RTX powerhead and
RL ratchet links are required to be connected). A hydraulic
pump is required to provide the hydraulic pressure and flow
to energize the tool and establish an accurate and efficient
hydraulic torque wrench system All RTX torque wrenches
require a hydraulic pump unit, twin-line connecting hose and
couplings in order to operate. All components must be capa-
ble of operating at the system maximum working pressure of
10,000psi (690 Bar). Note that the system maximum working
pressure is dynamic, not static. Many pump units are avail-
able which are suitable to operate the RTX torque wrench,
however, we would strongly recommend that Atlas Copco

power packs are used, as they have been rigorously tested
both for compatibility and performance. Atlas Copco will not
be responsible for torque wrench damage, malfunction or op-
erator injury due to the use of an incorrect pump unit, there-
fore please check the compatibility of your pump unit prior
to torque wrench operation. Pump unit specification varies
between Manufacturers, however, in order for correct torque
wrench operation, the pump unit must include the following:
Double Acting - Pump unit must be capable of double acting
operation for advancing and retracting the Torque wrench.
Variable Pressure Output - In order for torque setting, the
pump unit must able to be easily adjusted by the operator for
different pressure outputs
Retract Pressure - Sometimes termed 'idle' pressure, this is
the pressure used to retract torque wrench and must be fixed
at approximately 1500psi (103.5 Bar). This pressure must not
be Operator adjustable.
Remote Handset Controls - The preferred configuration for
the handset is such that upon starting the pump unit, the
pump enters retract or idle mode (pressure fixed at 1500psi /
103.5 bar). To advance the torque wrench, the handset ad-
vance/pressure button or lever is pressed and held, upon re-
lease of the button, retract mode is automatically entered. A
separate button is used to stop the pump.
Automatic Pressure Release - The pump must automati-
cally release system pressure when switching between ad-
vance and retract modes.
Pump Flow Rate - The speed at which the torque wrench
operates is proportional to the oil flow rate. Select a pump
with a suitable flow rate for the tool size and application.
Pressure Gauge - Clarity is important for accurate torque
setting, therefore a pressure gauge that can be simply and
clearly read by the operator should be present on the pump.
Hydraulic Couplings - RTX torque wrenches are fitted with
CEJN 230 screw-to-connect couplings (1/4" NPT) as stan-
dard. Ensure that any couplings that are used are compatible
with these couplings and are rated to the same working pres-
sure. Note: Mixing brands of hydraulic coupling can cause
flow restrictions.
Safety First
Atlas Copco power tools permit the user to accomplish their
bolting tasks with increased efficiency, accuracy and force.
The hydraulic tools covered in these instructions produce
large forces generated from high pressure fluid, air and elec-
tricity. The following safety related operating instructions
should be at the forefront when operating any Atlas Copco
hydraulic torque wrench.
Do not modify or subject any equipment or acces-
sories to impact - Contact Atlas Copco for special tool ap-
plications or equipment modifications. Unauthorized modifi-
cations may lead to premature tool failure which may cause
injury.
