Learning unit 1
Healthy and fit – everyone's doing it!
Level 1:
Fruit
and
vegetables
Material: Level 1 of the food pyramid;
Vegetables: tomato, carrot, red pepper, green pepper, mushroom, cucumber, onion
Fruit: apple, orange, strawberries, pear, plum, grapes, cherry.
Things to know about fruit and vegetables!
∙ Fruit and vegetables are healthy because they contain many vitamins!
∙ They taste best when they have just been picked (seasonal) and
∙ Have not been transported from far away (regional).
∙ The most vitamins are maintained when fruit and vegetables are eaten raw or are
slightly cooked. Exceptions are legumes such as peas, beans, and lentils, which
must be eaten cooked only.
∙ Fruit has more sugar than vegetables. That's why you should eat more vegetables
than fruit. And that's also why the dark green vegetable field on this level is
somewhat larger than the green fruit field.
Perfectly clear! You can get full eating fruits and vegetables!
Background information: In addition to vitamins, fruit and vegetables also
contain many minerals and secondary plant compounds that have a positive effect
on health and well-being. Legumes have a high iron content. A lot of dietary fiber
in plant fibers supports digestion. Because fruit and vegetables supply compara-
tively little energy (calories) yet have a high nutrient content, they can and should
be eaten several times daily – best "five a day," five servings a day, 3 servings of
vegetables and 2 of fruit.
I already know that!
A getting to know and sorting game
Lay the level 1 disk in the middle of the table and place all the wooden fruit and
vegetable pieces around it. Taking turns, each child may now select a wooden
piece, take it into their hands and show it to the other children. The child then
says the name of the food and whether it is a fruit or a vegetable. The group may
of course help out. Then the wooden piece is put down on the corresponding fruit
or vegetable side of the disk. Variation with the cloth pouch: Afterward, all the
wooden pieces are put into the cloth pouch. The cloth pouch is passed around,
each child feels a food and names it before the child pulls the wooden piece out
of the pouch. If the child guesses wrong, the piece is placed back into the pouch.
A challenge for sensitive fingers: Does a child retrieve his or her food from the
first round solely by feel? The wooden pieces are again assigned to the two fields.
?
Knowledge check
Who knows what about the fruit or vegetable that has been drawn from the pouch?
For example:
∙ Where does the fruit or vegetable grow (tree, bush, perennial, etc.)?
For visualization, play together "earth and sky": Fruit and
vegetables that grow on a tree or bush are assigned to "sky
and those that grow in or on the ground are assigned to "earth".
∙ Does the fruit or vegetable grow in our vicinity?
