Learning unit 4
Level 4:
Fat
Material: Level 4 of the food pyramid: bottle of oil, butter, 3 peanuts
Things to know about fats!
∙ Animal fats (e.g., butter, cream, lard) and vegetable fats (e.g., oil, margarine, nuts)
are important for the body, since some vitamins only can be utilized by the body
together with fat.
∙ They also supply fatty acids, which the body badly needs, e.g., to form the
smallest little cells.
∙ Make sure that you ingest high-quality fats, e.g., cold-pressed vegetable oils such
as canola or olive oil.
∙ The fat that is found in fish is very valuable and important for the body, because
it cannot be produced by the body.
∙ Be careful! Fats supply a super lot of energy – and too much fat will make you
fat! That's why you should use fats carefully.
Caution! Please consume food from this group sparingly!
Background information:
Many vegetable oils are valuable for the human organism due to their balanced
ratio of multiple unsaturated to saturated fatty acids, for example, safflower oil,
hemp oil, sunflower oil, soy oil, and canola oil. Essential fatty acids such as
Omega-6 and Omega-3 cannot be produced by the organism. Linseed and hemp
oil are rich in linoleic acid (Omega-6). The essential fatty acids are important for
developing cell membranes, and they lower blood fat and cholesterol levels. Many
animal fats are also necessary for the body, but in general consumption of vegeta-
ble fats is advised instead. Fats should only be used in moderation, approx. 2 small
portions a day, e.g., in the form of spreadable and frying fat. Under no circum-
stances should fat be completely abstained from over a longer period of time. Fat
is important for the immune system, metabolism, and mental well-being!
I already know that!
A getting to know and sorting game
Lay the disk for level 4 in the middle of the table and place the wooden pieces
of this food group around it. The children name the foods and think about
whether the food is a vegetable or animal fat. Consider together why the disk for
the 4th level is so much smaller than, for example, the disks for levels 1 and 2.
?
Wissens-Check (5 years and older)
Who knows something about the food that was drawn from the pouch?
For example:
∙ Where does butter come from? How is it produced?
∙ What types of other suppliers of animal fat do the children know?
∙ Which vegetable fats do the children know? What do the plants look like and
where do they grow?
∙ What nuts do the children know? (Walnut, hazelnut, macadamia nut, etc.)
