Learning unit 5
Level 5:
Sweet, salty, and fatty food
Material: Level 5 of the food pyramid: ice cream, cookies, slice of pizza, hamburger
Things to know about "sweet, salty, and fatty" foods!
∙ The are hardly any foods in nature that are at the same time fatty and sweet or
fatty and salty. Such products are therefore often prepared – usually a heavily
processed food, for example, sweets and fast food. You should eat them only
rarely and at most one serving a day!
∙ Why, when precisely these products taste so good? Very simply: Too much sugar,
salt, and fat can result in being overweight and in illnesses.
∙ Too much sugar, also sugar from fruit and juice, will damage your teeth!
∙ And furthermore, included in such manufactured products are many other ingre-
dients that are not necessarily good for you, e.g., flavor enhancers, preservatives,
and colorings.
∙ The exception proves the rule: Admittedly, it's gratifying to have a piece
of chocolate melt on your tongue or to bite into a crunchy potato chip. That's
why the foods in this group are not off-limits. However, you should eat them
wisely. And brush your teeth soon afterward! Caution! Foods in this group should
be enjoyed in small portions and as something special!

Background information:
Sugar, salt, and fat mutually reinforce each other when experiencing taste. That's
why it's fun to consume them, and you don't want to stop. Yet such foods supply
many calories – and at the same time often hardly any nutrients, which is why
they also don't make you really full. For this reason, one serving is allowed that is
around a handful as a "growing" serving size. You should avoid more than that.
Soft drinks such as sodas are sweets, just like many "children's foods" such as
sweetened corn flakes or yogurts.
I already know that!
A getting to know and sorting game
Lay the disk for level 5 in the middle of the table and place the wooden pieces
of this food group around it.
The children name the foods and think about why the food is
assigned to this level: Is it too sweet, too salty, too fatty? They can also consider
which ingredients turn the food into a "calorie bomb", e.g., the cheese
and pepperoni on the pizza.
Consider together why the disk for the 5th level is the smallest of the
food pyramid and what the red color suggests.
