Grains in the "practice test"
Bring in the food that corresponds to several or all of the wooden pieces.
The children assign the wooden piece that corresponds to the food.
Size, appearance, smell, etc. are compared and discussed in the group.
Tasting
Bring in bread or rolls of different types of flour and have the
children (blindfolded, where appropriate) perform a taste test. Do they taste
a difference, for example, between white and whole grain bread or between
rye bread and spelt bread? Different kinds of flakes, e.g., oat flakes, corn flakes,
etc, can also be tasted. It's more difficult with rice and noodles, since they should
be eaten cooked. In this case, the appearance of different varieties could be com-
pared and differentiated.
Tip: Prepare a vegan burger with a group of older children. A whole grain roll is
cut up for it and covered with lettuce and favorite vegetables. Whoever wants to
can first spread some mustard on their slices.
The practical check
Now it's the children's turn: Have they already today eaten something made from
grain (whole grain bread, unsweetened muesli or cereal flakes)? And what is in
their lunch box? White bread and chocolate cookies? Or whole grain bread and
whole grain cookies?
