Learning unit 7
Applied knowledge:
The food pyramid!
The food pyramid is now complete! Now assemble the pyramid: The 5 levels
stand on top of each other and as large as the pyramid itself is the knowledge of
the children about the food, the food groups, and the nutritional values of the
food! It's time to test this knowledge!
Note: This learning unit can be dealt with extensively. If time allows, cover it on
several days or plan two blocks for it.
What's what?
Sorting game
The pyramid is in the middle of the table. All of the food items are placed in the
cloth pouch. The pouch is now passed around. Each child pulls out a food item
when it's their turn. The child names the food and the food group and assigns it
to the appropriate level on the pyramid. All the other children consider together
whether the food was correctly placed. If not, the wooden piece is placed back
in the pouch. Then it's the next child's turn, until all the food items are distri-
buted on the levels.
Variation: All the food items lie around the pyramid. The children take them and
assign them to the levels. In doing so, there is no need to take turns. When all
the wooden pieces are on the pyramid, the children will check together whether
everything has been assigned correctly.
Assigning with the die
The pyramid is in the middle of the table, and all the food items are lying around
it. The die is ready to use. It displays the colors of the food groups or the pyra-
mid disks, e.g., light green/dark green for "fruit and vegetables".
The first child rolls the die and selects an appropriate food item, depending on
the color rolled, e.g., dark red – the child chooses the ice cream, names it and
puts it down on the highest level.
If the joker is rolled, the child can select a food and assign it to the
appropriate level. If a color/level is rolled for which no food item is available any
longer, the child may roll once more. If there is no longer a suitable food item
on the second try as well, the die is passed on to the next player. In this game as
well, the children monitor one another and may help each other out with tips.
Five wins! (For 2 to 7 players)
The pyramid is in the middle of the table, and the wooden food items are in the
pouch. Each player randomly draws 5 food items from the pouch and places
them down in front of themselves. The die is now rolled in turn clockwise. If a
player rolls a color/level for which an appropriate food item lies in front of them,
the player may place it on the corresponding level of the pyramid – of course,
for fruit or vegetables for example, on the correct side of the pyramid. If the pla-
yer does not have a food item that matches the rolled color/level; the player
cannot put down any food item in this round as well.
If the joker is rolled, the player is in luck: The player can put down a food item
of their choice – but correctly! Incorrectly placed food items must be removed
from the pyramid and returned to the player. Players roll and place the food
items until one player is able to place all five food items. Five wins! Tip for little
unlucky ones: If a player was not able to place any food item in 2 rounds, that
player may roll the die a second time in the next round if the first roll was again
unlucky.
