Learning unit 6
Drinks
Sufficient liquids, of course, form the basis of a healthy balanced diet! 6 glasses of
unsweetened liquid are recommended per day. To emphasize the importance of
water and other low energy drinks, provide a full glass of water for each child
while dealing with the pyramid and remind them if necessary to drink it from time
to time. Talk together about the drinks as well, especially in conjunction
with the 5th level of the food pyramid:
∙ Which drinks are good for a balanced diet? (Carbonated and noncarbonated
water, unsweetened tea, possibly fruit juice spritzers with 1/3 fresh juice to 2/3
water, etc.)
∙ Which drinks are rather unfavorable for a balanced diet and also not a real thirst
quencher at all? (Soft drinks, colas, sweet hot chocolate, etc.)
Things to know about drinks
∙ Tap water is the best monitored food in Germany. And instead of expensively
packaged mineral water in plastic bottles, it is delivered almost free from the
faucet.
∙ Really refreshing and good tasting is water with "a special touch": Add lemon
slices, raspberries (fresh or frozen), a sprig of mint, or a cucumber to the water.
∙ Fruit or herbal tea, warm or cold as "iced tea", is likewise very refreshing.
∙ An undiluted, freshly pressed juice, or a smoothie contains many healthy
vitamins, unlike soft drinks. Since the fruit, however, contains quite a lot of sugar,
a maximum of one glass per day should be drunk. A fresh juice or smoothie
replaces one serving of fruit.
∙ Caution! Juices are not alike! Fruit juice drinks from concentrates or nectars are
often mixed with added sugar. These are sweets and belong on the 5th level!
Food check!
Bring in different liquids, e.g., water, tea (sweetened and
unsweetened), fruit juice (e.g., apple juice, orange juice), fruit nectar, a soft drink,
milk. Consider together which of these drinks are thirst quenchers – and which
drinks are actually sweets. Which drink belongs on which level?
The children can in the meantime certainly easily tell the difference!
Water, unsweetened tea, juice spritzer: the foundation!
Undiluted fruit juice:
1 glass =
1 serving of fruit, therefore on the light green field of level 1!
Milk:
1 glass =
1 serving of dairy product, therefore on level 3.
Nectar, soft drink:
sweets! Therefore on the red level 5 – and at most 1 glass per day!
