Knowledge check
Who knows something about the food that was drawn from the pouch?
For example:
∙ Where does milk come from? Which animals produce milk that can be drunk by
people? (Cow, goat, sheep, etc.)
∙ How are yogurt, quark, and cheese formed? You will presumably have to explain
to the children that certain bacteria are added to the production. It is not so dif-
ficult to produce cream cheese or yogurt yourself – maybe it would be worth a
try?
∙ What types of cheese do the children know?
∙ Do they know other dairy products? (Buttermilk, kefir, etc.)
∙ From which animals do we eat meat?
∙ What types of fish do the children know?
∙ Where do eggs come from?
T
Milk products in the "practice test"
Bring in the food that corresponds to the wooden pieces. These can of course be
supplemented by other milk products, e.g., buttermilk, kefir, quark, layered curd
cheese, and natural yogurt as well as pieces of different sorts of cheese. Size,
appearance, smell, etc. are compared and discussed in the group.
Tasting
Have the children (with closed/blindfolded eyes) take taste samples.
Proceed similarly with the cheese. It is also exciting here to taste cheese varieties
with different fat content or pieces of a cheese variety with
different degrees of maturity (e.g., Gouda).
"Cross-mixing" tip: Prepare a milkshake with a group of older children (6 years
and older). Fruit (e.g., bananas, strawberries, etc.) is finely mixed with milk for this.
The shake becomes somewhat sweeter when dried fruit such as dates are added.
For a traditional sandwich, 1-2 lettuce leaves, vegetables (such as cucumber,
tomato, etc.) and a slice of cheese, ham, cold cuts, tuna fish, or egg are placed
between 2 slices of wholegrain bread. Whoever wants to can first spread mustard
on the slices of bread.
A healthy muesli can be prepared in no time from fruit, yogurt, milk, and oat
flakes (small leaf are best). Three simple options to illustrate combining food from
2 or 3 levels into a healthy and tasty product!
The practical check
Now it's the children's turn: Have they already eaten dairy products today?
And what is in their lunch box?
