1.5. EMPLOYEE TRAINING
1. The employer is responsible for providing a training program for all employees working on
wheels concerning the hazards involved in wheel maintenance and the necessary safety proce-
dures to be observed. The terms 'service' and 'maintenance' refer to all activities involved in
mounting and demounting wheels, such as infl ation, defl ation, fi tment, removal and handling.
• The employer must ensure that no employees work on wheels unless they have received suit-
able training regarding the correct maintenance procedures for the type of wheel being serviced
and the relative safety procedures, and are specifi cally appointed to do so.
• Information to be used in the training programme shall include, at a minimum, the applicable
information contained in this manual.
2. The employer is required to ensure that all employees meet the requisites for working safely
on wheels, which includes the following activities:
• Demounting tyres (including defl ation).
• Inspecting and identifying rim wheel components.
• Tyre mounting.
• Using any restraining device, cage, barrier, or other installation.
• Handling rim wheels.
• Tyre infl ation.
• Keep away from the tyre changer while infl ating the tyre and do not lean over the wheel when
inspecting the wheel after infl ation.
• Wheel installation and removal.
3. The employer shall evaluate each employee's ability to perform these tasks and to service rim
wheels safely, and shall provide additional training as necessary to assure that each employee
maintains his or her profi ciency.
1.6. PRE-USE CHECKS
Before beginning work, carefully check that all components of the machine, especially rubber or

plastic parts, are in place, in good condition and working properly. If the inspection reveals any
damage or excessive wear, no matter how slight, immediately replace or repair the component.
1.7. DURING USE
In the event you hear any strange noise or feel unusual vibration, if a component or system is not
operating properly, or if there is anything unusual at all, stop using the machine immediately.
• Identify the cause and take any necessary remedial action.
• Contact your supervisor if necessary.
Make sure that all other people are positioned at least 6 metres (20 feet) from the machine.
To stop the machine in an emergency:
• disconnect the power supply plug;
• interrupt the compressed air supply by disconnecting the supply pipe.
