2.4 TERMS AND DEFINITIONS USED IN THIS MANUAL
Bit: Simplification for Binary digit, it is the smallest information unit that can be stored in
the binary system and it may be 0 or 1.
Byte: It is a piece of binary information formed by a set of 8 bits, which can generate
values from 0 ~ 255.
AC: Alternate current.
DC: Direct current.
Scan cycle: A complete cycle of the program contained in the PLC, from reading the
inputs to updating the outputs.
I/O: Abbreviation for Inputs/Outputs.
FBD: Function Block Diagram. Graphic language for PLC programming in which variables
(inputs, outputs, etc.) are interconnected by means of function blocks, resembling the
logic gates.
