7.4.2.2 Counter Mode 1 – Fixed Counting and Non-Retentive
The counter can work in two modes, count up or count down, selected through the counting
direction input. When in count up mode, input pulses will increase the counting value
until reaching the programmed value, thus starting the counter output contacts. When in
countdown mode, input pulses will decrease the counting value until reaching zero, thus
starting the counter output contacts. In both cases, to turn the output off, it is necessary to
activate the reset input or invert the counting direction. In case of de-energizing the counting
value will not be maintained. In this example the counter C01 will count the digital input I06
pulses. The counter output contact will keep active when the counting value equals 20.
Note that when the counting value reaches 2 the counting direction is changed to down,
making the counter output turn on with counting value 0. Changing the counting direction
again to up, the output is reset.

When the PLC is energized, the initial counting value will depend on the counting direction.
If the direction is up the counting value will be 0; if down, the counting value will be the
same as the programmed value.
