13. STEERING FRICTION
[TILLER HANDLE TYPE ONLY]

Inspection/Adjustment:

1) Set the steering friction lever in the lock position (i.e. where
the lever comes in contact with the stopper by turning it

fully to the left).

2) Holding the steering friction lever locked, apply 98 N (10.0
kgf) of load to the center of the tiller handle throttle grip
7
and check that the outboard motor does not turn.

3) If the outboard motor turns, set the steering friction lever in
the lock position and tighten the 8 mm self-locking nut to
20
the specified torque.
TORQUE: 9.5 N . m (1.0 kgf . m, 7 lbf . ft)
4) If the outboard motor still turns after tightening the 8 mm
self-locking nut to the specified torque, check the disc of the
friction block for wear or contamination with grease.
Replace the friction block if necessary (P. 16-3).
